Last night during class my Si-hing told us something very interesting about the difference between what we do in class and out in the real world. What we practice in the classroom is the "pretty" version because we're still learning how to execute proper technique. But in the real world, where there is adrenaline and other physical reactions in the way, we don't have time to think about whether or not we did the form the "right" way. We just have to react according to the situation. This is why it is important to perform attacks and responses as aggressively as possible in class so that you're prepared for whatever may happen in the real world. This aggressiveness compensates for lack of experience at our particular skill level. It also trains students to react offesively rather than defensively at the first sign of trouble. Only when we get to a higher level with more experience, will we be able to attack or defend using proper technique, with control and the right amount of force for the situation.
